Who we are

Tamarind Retreat began as a residential project. Since its inception in the late 1980s, it has developed into one of Samui's most outstanding resorts, with uncommonly beautiful, custom-designed villas its trademark. In addition, Tamarind Springs, which opened in 1998 as Samui's first dedicated day spa, has gone on to become the most acclaimed wellness centre on the island and has won international recognition for its unique natural setting and complete commitment to the highest standards of customer service.

Based on this concept, we perceive our role as far more than the marketing of properties: our philosophy is to provide our clients with the real estate opportunities they desire while preserving the resources and augmenting the already unmatched natural beauty of this exceptional environment.

We also have close personal and professional ties on Samui Island and are comfortable and experienced in dealing with local legal and community issues.

The partners

Benjamas Pongchababnapa is a native of Samui. Ben liaises with the local community and coordinates all legal matters very precisely and reliably. She is actively involved in the Samui Spa Association. Her love for her birthplace is a driving force at Tamarind Retreat.

George Trapp, Managing Director of Tamarind Land, has lived in Thailand for the last 10 years. As principal partner in two Bangkok-based technology companies he is a member of the German, British and American Chambers of Commerce in Thailand.

Detlef Dirksen is the architect of the magnificent homes and spa of Tamarind Retreat. German by birth, he has traveled extensively in Asia and has made Ko Samui his home for close to 20 years. His talent in land assessment, landscape development and house design is an indispensable asset.

Shelley Poplak was born in South Africa. was born in South Africa. Drawing on her extensive background in publishing, marketing and public relations, Shelley applies her creative energies to developing product and communication concepts.
